"Community Impact: Leadership at Austin’s Social Profits"



On Friday, September 15th, join us for a panel discussion on the topic: “Community Impact: Leadership at Austin’s Social Profits”.

Our mission is to elevate the role of leadership in the lives of the citizens of Central Texas; to focus on the vitality and necessity of regional leadership capital; and to serve others through the process of encouraging individuals to grow, prosper and make a significant difference through the practice of leadership skills.

David Balch is the president and chief professional officer for United Way Capital Area. And for the last 23 years, his passion for people has led him to work for several United Ways across the country. In a time when the environment is continually changing David sees United Way’s role as a catalyst to empower the community and bring people together to find solutions and improve lives. In 1979, David Balch received his bachelor’s degree from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. He received his master’s degree in management and public policy from the Heinz School at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1985. David is married to Kathy Uitvlugt (IT-FLU-GHT), and they have two daughters Kelsey, 13 and Hannah, 11.

In April 1996, Fred Butler was selected as the first Executive Director for the Austin/Travis County Community Action Network (CAN).  In this current position he is responsible for leading the CAN’s 15 partner organizations in their role as a community forum for creative and collaborative problem solving, inclusive community participation and community consensus building.  He also directs the collaborative in its work providing tools that community organizations can use to most effectively leverage resources to meet evolving community challenges, particularly in health and human services.  The CAN provides a multitude of assessment and planning documents that are available to the public.

Betty Otter-Nickerson joined the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) as chief operating officer in 2005. In an effort to increase the LAF’s operational infrastructure and strengthen its management systems and processes on a global scale, Betty provides managerial oversight and administrative capabilities for all of the Foundation’s activities.

Her responsibilities include financial and operational management, facilitating communications between divisions, ensuring that all policies are compliant and current, administration of grants and contracts, supervision of staff and programs and implementing policy development. Betty is also responsible for implementing short- and long-term strategic direction and business plans, goal-setting and evaluation, technological evaluations and implementation.

Dan Pruett is President and CEO of Meals on Wheels and More, one of the oldest and most respected charities in the Austin area.  During his two years there, he has strengthened its financial position and established solid collaborations with other non-profits.  He has also started two new service programs: Meals for Kids (hot, nutritious, kid-friendly meals delivered to at-risk children in after-school mentoring programs) and Country Wheels (delivering frozen meals to homebound people in rural areas).  Dan has increased the number of meals prepared from 713,000 in FY’2003 to 855,000 in FY’2005. Dan is President of the Meals on Wheels Association of Texas, Chair-Elect of the United Way Partner Agency Council.  He is Immediate Past Chair of the Basic Needs Coalition of Central Texas.
