On Friday, February 20, 2009, join us for a presentation by Dr. Pat Forgione, AISD Superintendent of Schools on the topic: Performance Management in AISD:Tools for Teaching Excellence..
Our mission is to elevate the role of leadership in the lives of the citizens of Central Texas; to focus on the vitality and necessity of regional leadership capital; and to serve others through the process of encouraging individuals to grow, prosper and make a significant difference through the practice of leadership skills.
Dr. Forgione was unanimously appointed Superintendent of Schools by the Austin Board of Trustees on August 17, 1999, the seventh leader to serve in the 1990s. He oversees the fifth largest school district in Texas, with more than 82,000 students, over 11,000 employees, 110 campuses and an annual budget of over $900 million. Dr. Forgione and the Trustees have forged a challenging education agenda that has shown substantial progress under the Texas Accountability System.
Under Dr. Forgiones leadership, AISD produced four significant and nationally prominent enhancements to the systems operation. Each of these initiatives exemplifies thoughtful and research-based approaches that AISD has taken to address these most critical issues facing urban school districts across the country:
High School Redesign: $16 million grant from the Gates and Dell foundations to develop a portfolio of reform strategies, including the conversion of AISDs eleven comprehensive high schools to create more personal and instructionally challenging professional learning communities to ensure rigor, relevance, relationships and results;
Legacy Leadership: the AISD succession plan to support the growth of future leaders from the classroom to the principalship;
Strategic Compensation: performance pay incentives to recruit, retain and reward high performing principals, teachers and schools, especially focusing on our neediest campuses; and
Tools for Teaching Excellence: the innovative performance management system under development in AISD to put in place the practices, routines, tools and data to enhance educational decision making from the boardroom to the classroom, using powerful, useful, high quality and easily accessible metrics, and eventually to the living room.
Previously, Dr. Forgione served as United States Commissioner of Education Statistics, National Center for Education Statistics, Washington, D.C. ,State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Department of Public Instruction, Dover, Delaware and in many positions of educational significance in research and administration.
He holds five degrees including a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Administration and Policy Analysis.
