On Friday, March 20, 2009, join is for a panel discussion of the topic: The leadership challenges of providing healthcare during a recession. The panelists are Mark Clayton of St. Davids Healthcare, Greg Hartman of Seton Hospitals and Patricia Young Brown of the Travis County Healthcare District. .The moderator will be Earl Maxwell, CEO of St. Davids Healthcare Foundation.

Mark Clayton, Senior Vice President at St. Davids HealthCare, is responsible for strategic planning and development activities for this comprehensive five-hospital system in Central Texas. In his role, Mark leads business development, growth initiatives, marketing functions, public relations, communications and public affairs for the Austin market.
Through more than 25 years of experience in healthcare, 14 of which with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), Mark has served as Chief Executive Officer of some of HCAs leading hospitals, including Henrico Doctors Hospital, Redmond Regional Medical Center and Reston Hospital Center. Through these experiences, as well as a five-year tenure as Regional Vice President of Blue Cross Blue Shield, Mark has established a keen knowledge of not only healthcare economics and operations, but the overall business environment as well.
In addition to his work in healthcare, Mark and his wife Pat have been active in community service in a variety of leadership roles, including Chamber of Commerce boards, United Way, American Heart Association and advisory boards of both Trinity University and Baylor University.
Greg Hartman, Senior Vice President of Seton Hospitals: is responsible for the planning, marketing, public relations and communications activities of the Seton Family of Hospitals, as well as oversight for the campus of the University Medical Center at Brackenridge, including the Clinical Education Center @ Brackenridge. Seton is the regions leading provider of health care and is the second largest corporate employer in Central Texas with hospitals and staff recognized as some of the best in the nation.
Prior to joining the Seton Family of Hospitals, Hartman was a Managing Director for Public Strategies, Inc., an Austin-based strategy and communications firm. Hartman provided strategic counsel on legislative and political strategy, media relations, communications and marketing for a variety of clients. With years of experience in public policy development and organizational change at the local, state and federal levels, Hartman has helped to create and implement hundreds of communications and marketing strategies to accomplish public policy initiatives.
Prior to joining Public Strategies, Hartman was a Senior Partner with MGT of America, a management consulting and education public policy research firm, serving as Southwest Regional Director and managing MGTs Texas office. He opened the Austin office in 1995 and helped it become the firms largest and most profitable regional office. While with MGT, Hartman focused on government management consulting engagements, and developed the firms public-policy research and communications practice.
Previously, Hartman served as Executive Assistant and Director of Communications for Texas State Comptroller John Sharp. There he helped create and direct the Texas Performance Review, which became a nationally respected program analyzing state government operations to search for efficiencies, innovations and new service delivery opportunities. His work also included the creation of the award-winning Texas School Performance Review, which analyzed public school performance and policies throughout the state. Subsequently, he worked on the creation of the first federal National Performance Review with the office of Vice President Al Gore.
Hartman was a legislative aide in the Texas House and the Chief of Staff for State Senator Carlos Truan for three legislative sessions. Additionally, for nearly two decades, he worked as a strategic, operations and media affairs consultant for several political campaigns, including campaigns for President, the U.S. Senate, numerous statewide campaigns including Governor, Lt. Governor and Comptroller, and a variety of local government offices. He is an active volunteer with the Austin Independent School District, where he has assisted the district with several bond proposals and elections, as well as serving as the Chair of the Citizens Task Force on Boundary Re-Assignment.
Ms. Patricia Trish Young Brown is the President/Chief Executive Officer of the Travis County Healthcare District. Previously, she served for five years as the Chief Executive Officer of the City of Austins Community Care Services Department responsible for the Austin/Travis County Community Health Centers (FQHC), City of Austin/Travis County Rural Medical Assistance Programs and the Austin Womens Hospital. In addition, Young Brown served a four year term as President of the Indigent Care Collaboration (ICC), a regional collaboration of healthcare providers that serve the uninsured and underinsured in the Central Texas Region. She now serves on the ICC in the role of Past President.
Prior to her public service, Ms. Young Brown worked for Seton Family of Hospitals,
formerly know as the Seton Healthcare Network, in a variety of managerial capacities as
Chief Operating Officer of Seton Health Partners physician group, Executive Director of
Medical Management Resources and Director of Seton Healthcare Network Planning and Network Development. In addition, she served as Director of Consulting for Research and Planning Consultants; preparing healthcare service demand projections, Certificate of Need Applications and expert witness services. Her early career began with Arthur Andersen and Co. where she developed areas of expertise including oil and gas and real estate industries, international taxation and healthcare related taxation of for-profit and not-for-profit entities, joint ventures, financial forecasts and projections and alternative delivery systems.
Ms. Young Brown is a senior executive with a record of success in strategic planning,
policy development and results oriented business execution. She is a skilled leader, team builder, operations manager and demonstrated community collaborator with the ability to solve difficult problems and implement and manage change to improve organizational effectiveness and outcomes. She possesses in-depth knowledge and experience of both private and public sector healthcare service delivery including ambulatory physician practice operations, Federally Qualified Health Centers, hospital delivery system development and healthcare financing mechanisms.
She holds a BS in Accounting from the University of Denver, Colorado and is a Certified
Public Accountant. Ms. Young Brown lives with her husband in the Lost Creek neighborhood with two sons ages 10 and 16. Her second son, age 19, attends St. Edwards University and her eldest son, 22, serves in the United States Army stationed at Camp Ederle, Vicenza, Italy having recently completed a deployment in Iraq.
Last Friday at The Austin Leadership Forum, Dr. Pat Forgione, AISD Superintendent, gave a talk, Performance Management in AISD: Tools for Teaching Excellence. Here are three take-away points:
1. Leadership is the art of getting things done you cannot just be a thinker. This requires fidelity of implementation.
2. Create the future, do not defend what is.
3. Know the context community, strengths, and deltas.
