On Friday, June 19th, join us for a presentation by Allen Weeks on the topic: Developing Community Leaders.
Our mission is to elevate the role of leadership in the lives of the citizens of Central Texas; to focus on the vitality and necessity of regional leadership capital; and to serve others through the process of encouraging individuals to grow, prosper and make a significant difference through the practice of leadership skills.
Allen Weeks works in east Austin doing community development and consulting on educational issues. Along with his wife Julie, Allen has helped lead a transformation in the St. John community. As president of the St. John Neighborhood Association, Allen has worked to turn around Webb Middle School and Reagan High School. Without district help, Allen, Julie and the community have been able to organize a Family Resource Center at Webb that will support over 200 families this year with social services. The model will expand to 5 other schools next year.
In 2006, the efforts of Allen and other leaders in the St. John community were recognized by the Americas Promise Alliance, founded by General Colin Powell. Named one of the Top 100 Communities for Youth in America, St. John has subsequently been featured on the Today program. Allen has also been recognized by the Texas Education Agency, Bank of America and Austin Partners in Education for his community leadership in education.
Allen holds a B.A. in English and Religion from Washington and Lee, an M.A. in Teaching from Duke, and a M.A. in Asian Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. He taught for 15 years in urban schools in Virginia and has also worked in education in Pakistan and as a consultant for Apple. He and Julie have two children, Ashley (4) and Ryan (3).
